Apple announced the iPad today the long awaited tablet device that has been rumored forever. To be honest it’s a large iPod Touch/iPhone. People will complain that the storage isn’t large enough or that there isn’t a camera on there. I personally noticed that this could be used as a musical instrument/controller. For example on the iPod Touch/iPhone there is an App called ‘TouchOSC‘.

I’m hoping that the same guys create a version for the iPad. If you are familiar with Jazzmutant’s Lemur you know that TouchOSC on the iPod Touch/iPhone is basically the same thing on a smaller scale. It was never a problem until today because a bigger screen is what you truly need and wanted for something like this.

I personally think that Jazzmutant as a company is going to be slowly forced into becoming a software only company and should really think about developing an App for the iPad before guys that did TouchOSC or someone else might even jump in. At the price point of 1700 – 1800 usd for the Jazzmutant Lemur vs starting price of 499 usd of the Apple iPad, no one in their right mind would purchase the Lemur today unelse you like wasting money.

iPad is the most exciting potential music device of the year. Suck it NAMM, you fucking joke.

*Update

I do know that the iPad is completely functional with all iPod Touch/iPhone Apps. So therefore TouchOSC would work with the iPad but I think it just enlarges the app to fill the screen. I want new App to utilize the full screen.

Here is a hands on demo of the iPad:

  • I love the calculator watch.

  • alterac you are so lame lol

I was thinking the SAME THING as they were announcing… ahaha

  • SF says:
  • I hear Jazzmutant might be announcing a cheaper hardware model. I hope it’s true.

  • Piggers says:
  • The problem with the Ipad is it you can’t connect it to your computer using a cable, so you have to use wireless for connection, which you would not want to use in a live situation, so the Lemur still wins in the music department.

  • Soulfrost says:
  • Yeah it’s very true. I did end up trying the iPad route and it works but there is a sight visual lag but seems to be spot on other wise. Ultimately though it didn’t feel solid enough to continue to use it in that manner.

  • Martin says:
  • Version for iPad has bigger resolution, so you can use more controller than on the iPad/iPhone. It’s not just bigger.

  • Soulfrost says:
  • @Martin – Yup you are completely right.

  • Ilya says:
  • The only thing which i don’t like is that there is no soft for iPad to make as sophisticated as patches, as on Lemur, TouchOSC haven’t even controller feedback. And 1 GHz ARM CPU, and 3d-acceleration are definitely can handle that. So the era of accessible multi-touch music controllers will begins with developing such software for iPad.

  • Soulfrost says:
  • I’m not sure what you mean by feedback.. TouchOSC had visual feedback and I believe Lemur only has that too. The problem with multi-touch music controllers like the lemur/ipad is that you don’t have touch/feel feedback what you are doing. It’s still every cool that you can create your own custom layouts.

I don’t mean visual feedback, I talk about program feedback, in the sense that program can communicate back with controller, you can take motorized MIDI controllers for an example

  • Soulfrost says:
  • Oh I know what you mean now. Thats just a matter of time with updates for these programs. It’s just a simple script away.

  • Ilya says:
  • I agree, it’s the matter of time, but hexler seems to be focused on another projects, and not updating TouchOSC for a while.
I just dream about Jazzmutant porting Lemur OS to iPad. Lemur has so much more than TouchOSC, like Multiball, Ring Area, arrays, Signal Scope. But it also has the room to grow.
I thinking about multi-touch controller which you can edit real-time directly on the iPad, sad thing what I’m not developer.
